It's not often that I discuss politics on here, (I actually think this is the first time I have, really) but I feel like McCain's choice of Palin for his VP is worth noting.
First of all, let me say that I am a fairly liberal person. One of my major gripes with Obama was the fact that he was pretty inexperienced and he was running for one of the most important positions in our world today. While I didn't agree with McCain on a hell of a lot of things, I had always debated whether or not, given the chance, I would vote for him. I mean, he was moderate, had a lot of experience as opposed to Obama, and more importantly, I felt like I could trust him. As in, he had no "hidden agenda" that he was going to pull out of his ass once he got to the White House. I would say that I felt like this at the beginning of the summer, and now my views are definitely different (sans the "hidden agenda" part). One reason that pushed me far over to Obama's camp was Palin as McCain's VP. Okay, WHAT!? Let me explain.
First of all, Sarah Palin has no higher education than a bachelor's degree in Journalism from the University of Idaho (not really that competitive of a school to get into by today's standards). She has been the governor of her state (48th out of 50 in the rank for population; est. 680,000) for a mere 20 months, and while she has done reformations against her own party's will . . really? McCain decided Palin after one (ONE!) meeting with her and one (yes, again, ONE!) phonecall with her. Can we say "rash decision making"? I feel McCain could've picked someone a little more experienced instead of picking Palin, who is less experienced than Obama, which ultimately leads to McCain not being able to pull the "inexperience" card anymore. And for those who justify Palin's inexperience as "she just going to be the VP, not the president" think about it for a second. McCain is having constant health problems and has had various run ins with cancer . . when the president becomes incapacitated, who runs our country? That's right: the Vice President. Are people honestly going to stand up and say that Palin, after 20 months of government experience (Obama has had 8 years in the Illinois senate before becoming a U.S. Senator) Palin will be able to run our country when McCain is unable to? Strictly speaking, I don't think Palin will be able to handle the switch from governing 650,000 people to governing 305,000,000 of them.
And this is why I think looking at the two tickets with the thoughts and views aside, Obama - Biden have a more qualified ticket. Biden is consistent in what he has voted for (sans the 1996 vote banning gay marriage, but DOMA was needed in order to raise taxes) and has been in government for 30 years. Barack isn't ready to kick out anytime soon, and even if he did, we would have someone whose platform was known very well from his voting trends (which, let me say again, are very consistent). Yes, he might be extremely liberal, but that's better than Palin whose stance is a bit ambiguous because she has been doing this for a long time. We know she's an evangelical-Christian-conservative extremist, but she's supposedly a maverick in her party . . does this mean that the GOP won't be able to predict her moves? She fucking sued the Fed for putting the Polar Bears on the endangered species list and said that we should lift the ban of not being able to tamper with National Parks. For who knows, there might be oil in dem dere hills! So who cares if we destroy a couple of preserves? We have the opportunity to look for oil!
How stupid.
I talked with my mom about this, and she agrees with me that the Obama - Biden ticket is more promising if things go wrong (not politically speaking) , but she still is voting for McCain - Palin (I didn't expect her not to in the least).
I am just wondering how many undecided moderate voters Palin will pull in because she has a uterus. Also, if she brings in Hillary supporters, I'll truly be surprised (unless they were just voting on gender to begin with). This was much longer than I intended for it to be.
All in all, it's cool that if either party wins, extreme history will be made. And I would love it if Palin ran against Hillary in 2012 or 2016 if Barack goes for a second term.
lol
